Questions and Answers

I received this e-mail from a person from Boise, Idaho with the following question:

"I have a daughter who is interested in going to a Christian High School in which the following criteria is "on her list". She is interested in the spiritual side of the school, and she is looking for outreach opportunities. She is also interested in music, and sings reasonably well [even if I do say so as dad], and is looking for opportunities for public singing as well. She likes sports and wants some good ol' fun there as well. I, as her father, am looking for the academic side of things. I am also looking for preparation for college, and for experiences that would prep her for the "real world" and the world to come. So, I guess, to boil it down in simplistic terms, what makes your institution so special? Why does it exist, and for what purpose? Send us some e-mail or you may send a brochure to...

...Thanks for your time and effort."

Response:

"Thanks so much for your e-mail regarding our new Christian school. I too have a daughter and a son who share the same needs, and my wife and I too, share your goals. This is why we sacrifice (not only tuition money, but heavily participatig in the time and money to build the school) to see that our kids get a Christian education.

Unfortuneately, our school is not in Boise, ID and is a day school. You did not say what grade your daughter is in, but let me tell you about the world-wide Christian school system of which our school is a part.

I am a product of the Adventist school system. My parents sacrificed so we three kids could attend SDA schools...grade school, high school and college. I know many many people who do the same for their kids, even though they are not Adventists. The SDA school system is the second largest protestant school system in North America. Most every town, large and small, has an SDA school. Many of them are small, but under the same umbrella as the other larger SDA schools.

In the Boise area you not only have day schools but there is a boarding high school, Gem State Academy, nearby (Caldwell, ID?) [http://www.tagnet.org/gemstate/]. I also attended Walla Walla College, which I would have you consider by checking out their web page at [http://www.wwc.edu/].

For a complete list of SDA schools K-12, that have web pages, at [http://www.techline.com/~leiske/sdaschools.html] and SDA College and Universities that have web pages, at [http://www.techline.com/~leiske/sdacolleges.html]. For local SDA schools, look in your phone book under schools and/or Seventh-day Adventist.

SDA schools are not just for SDA kids, but are wide open to any students who have a wish to be in a school with a Christian atmosphere. Many SDA schools have about half of their enrollment of children of non-SDA families.

God bless you as you ponder this important investment in your children's future.

Sincerely,

Donn Leiske

I received this e-mail from a person who read the above letters:

"Hello!

I read part of your letter about Adventist schools in ID. We are thinking about moving to southern CA. Do you have any suggestions of how I could find K-8 schools between Salinas and Oxnard? I don't have access to yellow pages for these areas.

Thanks"

Response:

"You might wish to check out the Graphical Seventh-day Adventist Church Finder (click on name to link to site). This site has a map of the USA. You can select the state you want and then the county you want, then you will have a complete list of all SDA churches in that county (even if they are not on the web). You can then call the church or pastor and ask where the nearest SDA school is. Most SDA churches support a local SDA school.

You could also surf to the complete list of SDA Institutions on the Web. Go to 'Divisions,' then 'North American Division,' then explore 'Pacific,' 'Southern' and 'Southwestern' Unions. These should be different parts of California. Find the 'Conference Office' phone number, then call and ask for the 'Educational Superinendent.' This person would be in charge of all the SDA school in that part of the state and could answer any questions and give you the complete list of SDA schools in that area.

If you take your kids' Christian education as seriously as we do, you might want to check out the schools before making a final decision on where to live.

Hope this a help.

God bless your family."

Sincerely,

Donn Leiske
